I have a confession… When I first moved to Okinawa in May of 2016, I didn’t like it.
It was hot, sticky, confusing, and it felt as though every creepy-crawly was out to kill me. Then, in October of that same year, I was told that I was pregnant… with TWINS!
“Twins” made me believe that I was going to be under house arrest for the next 18 years once they were born. Out of sheer panic, I decided to edge my way out of my comfort zone. Braving driving on the other side of the road, lack of road signs, lack of knowing the language, and overall anxiety of possibly looking like an idiot to try out new places to eat. (After all, being pregnant with twins, food was really all I could think about.)
I did this for a couple of weeks (trying out a new cafe every other day or so), and do you know what happened? I became more confident in my abilities to drive while navigating the small roads with Google maps, understand the locals, and be comfortable in knowing that I will sometimes look like an idiot.
I starting venturing out further and further, trying new and more adventurous places and cuisines. I laughed with the locals and gazed in awe at the views. I’ve eaten more delicious meals than I ever have in my life, and some of them are served right in the sweet locals’ Okinawan home.
They have made me feel welcome. They have made me feel like family.
And, somewhere along the way, I fell madly in love with this island that I call home.
I hope that you can get as much from visiting these places as I have. Chances are, you will only be on this island for a limited time. You might as well make the most of it, and have an amazing adventure along the way.
Love & Lattes,
Lindsay
